Thrive Beyond Time: Inspiring Young Minds to Shape the Future
As cities evolve in response to climate change and ageing population, creating a sustainable future is no longer solely about protecting the environment. It is also about fostering communities where people of all ages can live well, stay connected and thrive. The intersection of green development and healthy ageing presents an opportunity to rethink how we design the places, services and experiences that shape everyday life.
In support of this vision, Chinachem Group proudly supported the Sustainable Futures: Green × Silver Student Innovation Challenge 2026, organised by the Department of Biology and Agriculture Society of Hong Kong Baptist University, inviting students to explore innovative ways to address environmental and social challenges while contributing to a more liveable and inclusive future.
Inspiring Innovation Through Community Engagement
Meaningful innovation begins with understanding people and communities. Through a series of workshops and visits to Nina Park and Pine Care residential care homes, students stepped beyond the classroom and into real-world settings, gaining first-hand exposure to the opportunities and challenges arising from sustainability and an ageing society. By engaging with older adults, community partners and industry professionals, participants were encouraged to see issues from different perspectives and better understand the needs behind the challenges. These experiences inspired students to connect creativity with empathy, transforming observations into thoughtful ideas with the potential to make a tangible difference in the communities of tomorrow.
Celebrating New Ideas for a Better Future
The final presentations showcased a wide range of inspiring concepts that reflected both imagination and purpose. Several teams were recognised for proposals that demonstrated strong potential to contribute to low-carbon living, community well-being and age-friendly innovation. The creativity, curiosity and commitment shown by the students were a reminder that meaningful change often begins with fresh perspectives. By connecting young talent with real-world experiences, the programme empowers the next generation to turn ideas into action and play an active role in shaping a more sustainable and inclusive future for Hong Kong.
Theme 1: Smart Green x Silver Co-creation
The team proposed Luma Agent, an AI-powered assistant designed to help older adults overcome barriers to digital technology. The solution provides support for everyday activities, including navigation, message management and safety reminders, while incorporating features such as fraud detection and health management. By making technology more accessible and intuitive, Luma Agent aims to enhance the quality of life of older adults and support independent living.
Theme 2: Green x Silver Co-crafting & Circularity
The project transforms food waste such as eggshells from the hospitality industry into biodegradable moisture-absorbing materials that can later break down into soil nutrients, supporting a zero-waste circular economy. Through intergenerational workshops involving both older adults and young people, the initiative promotes environmental education, community participation and active ageing, creating shared value for both people and the planet.
Theme 3: Green x Silver Co-farming & Nutrition
The project proposes introducing vertical farming and hydroponic technologies at Nina Park to create a platform that combines farming, education and community participation. Designed with older adults in mind, it encourages seniors to engage in planting activities, promoting healthy ageing, lifelong learning and social interaction. Through the production and sale of fresh produce, the initiative also strengthens community connections and supports a more active and fulfilling lifestyle.
