At the International Sheng and Reeds Festival 2026, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra (HKCO) brought together over a thousand enthusiasts of reed instruments from both Eastern and Western traditions for a large-scale joint performance, aimed at challenging a Guinness World Records™ title  for the largest reed instrument ensemble.

Among the participants was the “Endless Sheng – Tsuen Wan Elderly Sheng Ensemble”, a group of 90 elderly participants from the Tsuen Wan district established with the full support of Chinachem Group. The ensemble took to the stage alongside musicians from diverse backgrounds, setting a new world record while showcasing the cultural richness of China’s three‑thousand‑year‑old ritual music tradition.

Supporting Community Participation and Enriching Active Ageing

Supported by Chinachem Group, the “Endless Sheng – Tsuen Wan Elderly Sheng Ensemble” brings together elderly participants, with the eldest member aged 87. Through months of sustained learning and practice, the ensemble took to the stage on the performance day to demonstrate the outcomes of their journey — illustrating that engagement with music can remain meaningful and fulfilling at any stage of life.

By supporting the elderly in exploring a new musical instrument, the initiative seeks to foster connection and shared experiences throughout the learning process. Beyond musical development, it reflects the broader value of lifelong learning, highlighting how opportunities for personal growth and social connection can continue to unfold across different stages of life.

“Playing the sheng requires the coordinated use of both hands, the mind and breathing. This combination is particularly helpful for coordination among the elderly.”

  • “I almost gave up during the first lesson, but by the second and third sessions, I began to enjoy it. I never imagined I could learn something new at this age. Taking part in activities outside the home has been truly joyful.”
