Thrive Beyond Time: Craft With Heritage

With careful hands, the elderly stitched each piece, filling them with rice and sealing each seam with care. One by one, the “five stones” took shape, reviving a traditional game once rooted in childhood memories. In their hands, it found new life once again.

As Hong Kong faces an increasingly ageing population, the elderly are no longer seen as passive recipients of care, but as active participants in the silver economy. Through their skills, experiences and craftsmanship, they continue to create value and contribute meaningfully to society.

Advancing the Silver Economy Through Craft and Contribution

In collaboration with Gingko House, a social enterprise dedicated to elderly employment, Chinachem Group invited the elderly to handcraft “five stones” as commemorative pieces. These handmade creations were presented to guests attending the “Future-Ready Hong Kong Summit 2026”, co-organised by Chinachem Group, City University of Hong Kong and Hang Seng Bank. More than souvenirs, these pieces offered a tangible way for guests to experience the value of the silver economy — each one reflecting the craftsmanship and dedication of the elderly, and allowing their contributions to be seen and appreciated.

    As the elderly engaged in the making process, memories naturally resurfaced. Some recalled secretly crafting their own sets with rice as children, while others remembered long afternoons spent playing with neighbourhood friends.

    It is this shared sense of joy that bridges generations, reconnecting people through familiar experiences.
