The CCG School Sports Outreach Programme, organised by The Hong Kong, China Rowing Association (HKCRA) with the full support of Chinachem Group (CCG), has officially launched. The programme is expected to reach over 1,000 students at 16 primary and secondary schools across Hong Kong. Through taster sessions, school-team development, advanced training and inter-school exchanges, it will introduce more young people to indoor rowing and provide further training and development opportunities for those who wish to further pursue the sport. Selected students may also participate in the CCG Hong Kong Rowing Indoor Championships and Charity Rowathon 2027, where they can compete alongside participants from a diverse range of backgrounds and sectors.
The programme officially launched on 14 October at Wai Kiu College. Students were joined by Hong Kong rowers Chiu Hin Chun, gold medallist in the Men's Lightweight Single Sculls at the Nagoya Asian Games, and Cheung Yuen Shan and Leung Wing Wun, silver medallists in the Women's Lightweight Double Sculls, who shared their rowing journeys and personal stories. Together with professional coaches, the athletes led hands-on indoor rowing sessions, introducing students to the fundamentals of the sport. Through close interaction and practical participation, students learned basic rowing techniques and gained a deeper understanding of the sport, while friendly races allowed them to experience first-hand the fun and sense of achievement brought by rowing.
Sport as a Catalyst for Vibrant Communities
Guided by its Places with Heart brand promise, CCG strives to build healthier, more vibrant and better-connected communities through placemaking initiatives that enrich community life and foster social connections.
Schools serve as a vital platform for reaching young people and their families, as well as an ideal starting point for community engagement. Recognising this, CCG leverages schools as the initial touchpoint to encourage young people to build an active lifestyle and broaden their horizons through sport -- ultimately creating a ripple effect that extends from schools to families and the wider community.
Amy Wu, Director of Corporate Communications at Chinachem Group, says: "At CCG, we believe that the true value of any space lies far beyond its bricks and mortar -- it is found in its people and the meaningful connections they make.
“Sport is a dynamic catalyst that brings people together, fosters interaction and creates shared memories, serving as a powerful engine for community engagement. We hope to use schools as a launchpad to encourage more young people to embrace new experiences, make active participation a natural habit, and spread that energy to the wider community.
“When more people participate, our communities naturally grow healthier, more vibrant, and better connected.”
Fay Ho, Chairman of the HKCRA remarks, “Rowing is a sport built on strength, rhythm and unity. As rowers move backward without seeing what lies ahead, they must move perfectly in sync to propel the boat towards a shared goal. It is also a highly effective full-body exercise that can be enjoyed by people of all ages.
“Since 1994, Hong Kong, China rowers have achieved remarkable success at the Asian Games. We are delighted to have Asian Games medallists with us today to share their inspiring journeys with the students. Indoor rowing serves as the perfect gateway to the sport -- often acting as the first step toward on-water rowing. We hope today’s experience will spark students’ interest in rowing and encourage them to take that vital first step discovering their potential.”
Indoor Rowing: An Accessible Full-Body Sport
Indoor rowing is selected as the featured sport for this initiative because it bridges the gap between a highly specialized water sport and the general public, turning it into an inclusive sports experience open to all.
The sport combines cardiovascular and strength training, engaging major muscle groups including the legs, core, back, shoulders and arms. It is one of the few sports that offers a full-body workout while remaining low-impact with a low risk of injury.
Requiring no prior rowing experience, professional gear or water training from participants, indoor rowing is an accessible sport for people of different ages and fitness levels who are looking to build a regular exercise habit.
Furthermore, indoor rowing produces easily quantifiable results and thrives on collective goals and shared participation. It is an ideal sport for community challenges and team activities, inspiring people from different backgrounds to strive for the same goal, thereby building a deeper sense of involvement and community bonding.
The 4Es Approach: Explore, Engage, Empower and Excel
The CCG School Sports Outreach Programme will roll out across 16 primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong over the coming months, featuring school team development, advanced training, and inter-school exchanges. Student-participants will also have the chance to compete in the upcoming CCG Hong Kong Rowing Indoor Championships and Charity Rowathon at D·PARK in Tsuen Wan in March, 2027. The initiative is built upon the 4Es approach -- "Explore, Engage, Empower, and Excel". By creating this structured, progressive journey, CCG aims to guide students from their very first contact with the sport toward building lifelong healthy habits, strong teamwork, and a dedication to the community.
Activating Community Spaces Through Sport
In recent years, CCG has actively revitalised its malls and community spaces through a diverse range of cultural, arts, culinary and sporting experiences, encouraging interaction and community participation.
Alongside the school sports outreach programme, CCG has hosted initiatives including the CCG Pickleball Challenge, Tsuen Wan Games and the Taste of Tsuen Wan Food Festival, uniting people of all ages and backgrounds to create shared community memories.
Over the coming months, CCG and the HKCRA will continue to collaborate on a series of community engagement activities, bringing indoor rowing into the wider community. By leveraging its malls and community spaces, CCG aims to provide more opportunities for the public to discover and experience the sport.
Further event details will be announced in due course. Please stay tuned.
