Crossing Over Science and Art in an Urban Oasis

Indeed, Prof Chan spares no effort in assisting the team, going the extra mile to study disciplines beyond his expertise and taking the initiative to conduct research abroad. “Aside from sharing my geology and earth science knowledge, I hope to contribute more,” he says, adding that working with his comrade has been an eye-opening experience, “Q has shown me that an exhibition can be both educational and entertaining, providing visitors with great inspiration.”

Throughout the curation journey, the team has encountered pleasant surprises. Notably, to their delight, they discovered the colourful patterns of permineralisation in wood fossils under a microscope.

“The diamond-like structure is stunningly beautiful,” exclaims Prof Chan.

The uniqueness and significance of Nina Park extends beyond its fascinating collection of exhibits, as Prof Chan highlights. “Situated at the intersection of Victoria Harbour and Rambler Channel, Tsuen Wan stands at the geographical heart of Hong Kong. Look around 360 degrees, and you can see distinctive geological structures from every angle.” Moreover, Nina Park, along with the neighbouring Tsuen Wan Park and Promenade, creates a vast green space. In a densely populated district like Tsuen Wan, the greenery is like an urban oasis.

When asked how they feel as their brainchild is soon to launch, Prof Chan jokes in a light-hearted yet serious manner, “I might experience a form of postpartum depression, given my wholehearted devotion to its conception.” Q echoes the sentiment, “I feel like an expectant mother filled with mixed feelings, both anticipation and anxiety.”
