As part of the Pilot Programme on Community Living Room, a flagship targeted poverty alleviation initiative led by the HKSAR Government, the Tsuen Wan Community Living Room has officially opened. The project is funded by the Community Care Fund, with the venue, fitting-out works and part of the facilities sponsored by Chinachem Group ("CCG"), and operated by Yan Chai Hospital ("YCH"). Boasting a total area of 7,034 square feet, it is currently the largest Community Living Room in Hong Kong and is expected to serve 610 subdivided unit households, providing services to approximately 92,000 person-visits annually. The project has been made possible through the support of the HKSAR Government and a grant of over HK$30 million from the Community Care Fund. It also demonstrates the collaborative efforts of the Government, business and the community in delivering more comprehensive support for underprivileged families.

The Tsuen Wan Community Living Room is themed "Space to Grow Well". With deep roots in Tsuen Wan, both YCH and CCG have grown alongside the district for decades, witnessing its development firsthand. Leveraging CCG's expertise in placemaking and people-centric design, together with YCH's extensive service network and professional social services experience, the partnership has created a platform that integrates shared living spaces with diverse support services. The Community Living Room helps residents of subdivided units improve their living environment, expand social networks, develop interests and skills, and foster a stronger sense of care, respect and belonging within the community.

To mark the occasion, an opening ceremony was recently held at the Tsuen Wan Community Living Room. Officiating guests included Eric Chan, GBS, IDSM, JP, Chief Secretary for Administration; Chris Sun, JP, Secretary for Labour and Welfare; Alice Lau, JP, Permanent Secretary for Labour and Welfare; Edward To, JP, Director of Social Welfare; Andy Cheung, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of Chinachem Group; and Wendy Law, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Yan Chai Hospital, who also toured the Community Living Room facilities. Together, they activated a crocheted, heart-shaped plant installation symbolising the Community Living Room's people-centred ethos and its vision of helping service users embark on a future filled with peace, health and hope.

Andy Cheung, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of Chinachem Group, said: "The Tsuen Wan Community Living Room is the result of the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders and our project team. At CCG, we believe that a meaningful space extends beyond bricks and mortar. It is about connecting people, creating opportunities, and fostering growth. We hope the Tsuen Wan Community Living Room will provide a welcoming platform where members of all ages can come together, bond and support one another, while connecting them with resources and opportunities, and allowing everyone to feel the care of the community."

Wendy Law, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Yan Chai Hospital said in her speech, "The Tsuen Wan Community Living Room provides a spacious and comfortable sharing space alongside comprehensive support services, serving as an extension of home for its members. We look forward to seeing each member lead a purposeful life every day, grow together with the community, and embark on a journey towards a more enriched life."

As the largest Community Living Room in Hong Kong to date, the project offers a diverse range of facilities and services designed to cater to members' daily living, learning, personal development and wellbeing. Facilities include Living Room, Dining Room, Community Pantry, Laundry Room and Community Bathroom, enabling members to manage their daily household affairs with ease. The Community Living Room also features Baby's World (for children aged 0 to 6), Children's Room, Study Room, Multi-media Room, Music Room, Piano Room, Gym and Multi-Function Room, enabling users of all ages to pursue interests, learn new skills and participate in community activities. In addition, healthcare, employment and learning support services are available to help members strengthen health awareness and self-development capabilities, assisting them in seizing more opportunities for social mobility and personal growth. Through on-site social workers, volunteer programmes and outreach visits, the operating team proactively engages subdivided unit households in the district and invites them to join the Tsuen Wan Community Living Room, helping them integrate into the community and build mutual support networks.

The Tsuen Wan Community Living Room has gradually become a welcoming hub for local residents. Beyond benefiting from its services, members are putting their talents to good use to give back to the centre. 

Stephen, now in his sixties, was once a professional driver and has loved table tennis since childhood. In his younger days, he represented Tsuen Wan in numerous amateur competitions and also served as an assistant coach at a local club. Although health issues have led him to step back from the sport in recent years, his passion for table tennis has never faded. The spacious multi-function room at the Community Living Room can be flexibly adapted to hold a table tennis table, allowing him to enjoy the sport once again. Not only does he frequently visit to play with fellow members, but he has also taken the initiative to serve as a volunteer assistant coach for the centre's table tennis classes, allowing his dream to continue in a different way. The Tsuen Wan Community Living Room has not only allowed him to rediscover his passion, but has also given him the opportunity to give back to the community by sharing his experience. 

Seventeen-year-old Yuen Ying has been passionate about music from a young age and is proficient in both piano and guitar. Previously constrained by the limited space and poor sound insulation of her subdivided unit, she could only practise cautiously during the daytime. Since joining the Community Living Room, the well-equipped and spacious music room has become a secluded, dedicated space where she can practise without interruption. Once shy and reserved, she has grown significantly more confident. At the opening ceremony, she performed Tomorrow Will Be Better (《明天會更好》) on guitar alongside her mother, Qi On, who accompanied her on the piano, and several fellow members, expressing their hopes and aspirations for the future through music. The Tsuen Wan Community Living Room has not only provided her with a stable and suitable environment for practice but has also enabled her to make like-minded friends and pursue her dreams with greater confidence.
