Chinachem Group (“the Group”) inaugurated the Creating Places with Heart – Chinachem Group’s 60 Years of Progress Exhibition (“the Exhibition”) today in celebration of its 60th anniversary, with Secretary for Development Mr Michael Wong, JP and the Group’s Executive Director and CEO Mr Donald Choi officiating at the opening ceremony.

 

The Exhibition is being held at NINA MALL 1, with co-sharing community workshops elsewhere in Tsuen Wan, and admission is free of charge. The interactive design of the Exhibition records the Group’s transformation alongside the development of Hong Kong over the years, as well its vision of a liveable city evolving to address the trends of an ageing population, digitisation and sustainable development.  

 

“Chinachem Group has made remarkable contributions in the past six decades to the development of Hong Kong," Mr Wong said at the opening ceremony.  “The Group is actively promoting sustainability in property development.  Its collaboration with the Urban Renewal Authority in the Tonkin Street/Fuk Wing Street Development Project in Sham Shui Po will be deploying various types of Proptech, and is expected to become a role model in green construction.  In addition, Chinachem Group is committed to social responsibility. Apart from offering social housing units to families in need, it offers shop space to non-profit organizations at concessionary rentals.  The Group is appreciated for making positive impacts on society."

 

Mr Choi remarked that “we have curated this Exhibition not only to showcase the Group’s evolution over the past 60 years, but also more importantly to illustrate our business operations under our rejuvenated brand and core value of creating places with heart’, as well as our vision of the future city. The Group will continue to work in collaboration with different sectors while committing itself to making positive impacts on people, prosperity and the planet.” 

 

The Changing Past of Hong Kong’s Real Estate Industry

To showcase the close ties between the Group and the growth of Hong Kong, the curation team has invited the Hong Kong and South China Historical Research Programme of Lingnan University Hong Kong to consolidate research and information on the past 60 years of the Group, with the history of Hong Kong as a backdrop. Professor Lau Chi-pang, co-ordinator of the programme, said “the sources of information include what is available in public domain, as well as the Group’s property sales brochures and oral history given by ‘veterans’ who have been serving the Group for decades. Thanks to their support, we have managed to fill many gaps in the documentation.”

 

The Group’s milestones, from its founding to its present stage of development after 60 years, echo the history of Hong Kong and the real estate industry. In the 1970s, the Group was active in new town development; in the ’80s it moved into developing commercial projects and large-scale integrated projects as the economy boomed; and in 1997, it acquired the first land sold at auction after Hong Kong’s return to Chinese sovereignty, demonstrating strong confidence in the city’s future. Thus every step taken has been intertwined with the development of Hong Kong’s social fabric. In response to this economic transformation, the Group’s portfolio has expanded and diversified into property management, hospitality and entertainment. The Group has also committed to contributing to society by giving back to the needy in the community and addressing social issues through its core business.

 

Creating Smart and Inclusive Homes and a Liveable City

The touchless interactive displays at the Exhibition are designed to provide visitors of all ages with a unique experience, including the exploration of future smart home living and an understanding of how the Group is applying digitisation and ‘PropTech’ to its operations. Visitors can also preview the plans to create a co-sharing space at Nina Park for community ‘edutainment’. An important goal of the project is to promote sustainable development and social inclusion.  During the exhibition period, members of the public are welcome to join a series of co-sharing community activities such as guided tours, workshops and public discussion forums in which participants will contemplate how to build a more liveable community.

 

Cherish Old Hong Kong: Nostalgic Items and Scenes

In parallel with the Exhibition, a showcase of nostalgic items and scenes is being held at NINA MALL 1 & 2, featuring a collection of commercial, industrial and household items commonly used in the 1960s as well as 3D illusionary photography spots. The photo booths will take visitors on a space-time journey and recreate interesting, virtual experiences at a bowling centre, in a playground or in a street teeming with rickshaws in the old Hong Kong. These will become photography hotspots for sure.

 

Chinachem Group Executive Director and CEO Donald Choi remarks that the exhibition does not only review the journey of Chinachem Group with Hong Kong in the past six decades but also illustrates the effects on creating shared value for the society through modern architecture.
