Chinachem Group (the Group) has launched “Light Upcycled Art for All” – the Group’s Christmas public art programme with a focus on educating and engaging the public about upcycling, and an aim to bring positive change to local communities in Hong Kong. A key component of the programme is the “Wish to be – Renaissance of Used Lights" upcycled art exhibition. The exhibition, conceptualised and curated by architect and artist Dr. CHAN Lai Kiu, brings to the public a different kind of Christmas by offering visitors an educational experience through upcycled art. It will be open for public viewing from November 27 onwards at Nina Mall 1.
"Wish to be – Renaissance of Used Lights" Upcycled Art Exhibition
"Wish to be – Renaissance of Used Lights " upcycled art exhibition is curated by accomplished artist and architect Dr. CHAN Lai Kiu. She co-created the exhibition together with 12 local artists and produced 9 sets of art pieces which preserve the inherent shape or form of recyclable material while turning it into thoughtful art pieces. Each piece of work centres around a mind-touching and thought-provoking theme, creating probing questions which stimulate careful consideration from viewers. The exhibition will be open to the public for free, and guided tours will be provided throughout the exhibition period to help visitors get to know the artworks.
“It is important to build a sustainable environment for future generations. Chinachem Group is a leader among developers who support and promote sustainable development, and I would like to express my gratitude to the Group for supporting the exhibition. By incorporating environmentally sustainable elements we are adding an extra layer of meaning to all the artworks, and we hope to inspire curiosity among the public as a result,” continued Chan.
“As a responsible corporate citizen, the Group is devoted to its corporate vision of transforming Hong Kong into a more liveable city,” said a spokesperson of the Chinachem Group, “Through ‘Light Upcycled Art for All’, the Group is committed to providing a different kind of Christmas experience to the community, and to create new opportunities to show that everyone can contribute to making Hong Kong a greener, healthier and an even better city to live in.”
Christmas Hats at Chinachem Properties
As part of the Group’s “Light Upcycled Art for All” Christmas art programme, Dr. Chan Lai Kiu has created large-scale Santa hats from used bed sheets and table clothes collected from L'hotel Group, as well as recyclable cardboard materials. These Santa hats will be on display at 20 different Chinachem Group properties to demonstrate the creative possibilities of upcycling in different communities.
Nina Mall 1 Christmas Decoration and Large-Scale Outdoor Light Decoration
Upcycling is at the heart of the “Light Upcycled Art for All” project. While creating the Christmas light decoration, the Group also used upcycled items to create a Christmas tree shape which has been placed in the Atrium of Nina Mall 1. Formed out of a series of festive themed glass boxes containing used items such as bottle caps, plastic bottles, and aluminium cans, the installation allows visitors to walk into a mirrored interior and experience colourful lights in 360 degrees. An outdoor light installation in the shape of a Christmas hat will also be installed on a footbridge connecting Nina Mall 1 and Yeung Uk Road Market to help inject the local community with festive spirit.
“Light Upcycled Art for All” commenced in October 2019 with a three-month citywide light bulb collection campaign – fully supported by the Group’s properties, hotels and shopping malls – and has an aim to collect 50,000 used light bulbs for its Mission 50000 pledge, with the ultimate goal of helping Hong Kong’s elderly population. Members of the public are encouraged to visit the campaign website https://www.chinachemgroup.com/en/lightupcycledart or the 63 Mission 50000 pledge destinations* to sign up for Mission 50000 between now and December 31, 2019.
